In industry terminology, 3D meats refer to animals that are Dying, Diseased, or Disabled, while 4D meats include those categories plus animals that were Dead before arriving at a processing facility.
These animals may have died from illness, infection, or injury rather than undergoing standard procedures to prepare livestock for consumption.
They are deemed unfit for human consumption due to increased risks of bacterial contamination, chemical residues, and reduced nutritional quality. While legally permitted in some commercial pet foods after rendering (a high-heat processing method), their use is strongly advised against by many veterinarians and experienced raw feeders who prioritize animal health and long-term well-being.
When lower-grade meats are fed raw without cooking, harmful bacteria are not eliminated through heat, which may increase the risk of foodborne illness and cross-contamination within the household.
